It’s Never Too Late to Embrace a New Hobby: Senior Center’s CLUBS

To inspire participants to explore new interests and strengthen their skills, the Senior Center staff launched a project called CLUBS. For eight weeks, once a week, participants could choose a new activity or hobby to try—from crafts, embroidery, and painting to sewing and cooking.
You might remember Twilla and Larry’s story, a married couple who love spending time together at the Senior Center. They’re always up for an adventure—especially traveling to Hawaii—and enjoy cooking side by side. Twilla’s famous for her Thanksgiving apple pies, while Larry is known for his creative salad recipes. They also love being creative as a pair.
Twilla, who enjoys embroidery, suggested it be offered as a club. She even taught her instructor, Sabrina, how to do it—who then passed it on to the rest of the group.
And Larry? He surprised everyone. Although they assumed sewing wasn’t for him, he discovered a hidden talent and truly enjoys it. He didn’t know he had it in him and at 80. Fedel, instructor at the Senior Center, says:
“I wish he had the opportunity at an earlier age because he might have had a different path in life if he were encouraged to pursue this new talent.”
These clubs not only keep participants active, but also encourage patience, build community, and—most importantly—remind everyone that it’s never too late to discover a new passion.
