At 90, Still Giving: Kathryn’s Story of Service at HopeTHRIFT

Kathryn has spent her life giving back to the communities she’s been a part of, and that commitment hasn’t slowed down at 90 years old.

After decades of volunteering, she brought that same dedication to HopeTHRIFT in Watsonville nearly two years ago. There, she helps with everyday tasks like organizing clothing and keeping the store welcoming for shoppers and participants.

She especially enjoys connecting with the other volunteers, forming friendships, and being part of a team that supports one another. Through daily conversations and shared experiences, HopeTHRIFT has become a place where community comes naturally.

While her work may seem simple, it has a real impact. Volunteers like Kathryn help create a clean, welcoming, and supportive environment for both customers and program participants. Through her work, she directly supports HopeTHRIFT’s mission of funding programs that serve individuals with developmental disabilities.

For Kathryn, the reward is deeply personal.

“It makes you feel like your life is worthwhile,” she shared.

Her time at HopeTHRIFT has also given her something just as important a strong sense of connection. Being around others, talking, and building relationships has become a meaningful part of her experience. Her children have shared how proud they are of her lifelong commitment to helping others.

Kathryn encourages others to volunteer as well, simply saying, “It’s wonderful.”

During Volunteer Appreciation Week, her story is a reminder that every act of service matters. At HopeTHRIFT, it’s volunteers like Kathryn who help turn everyday moments into something meaningful for the entire community.
