Community & Connection | Children and Family Services
Families of children with developmental differences can often feel isolated or uncertain about how to find and connect with others who truly understand their experiences. Friends and acquaintances may not always recognize the unique supports and challenges that come with raising a child with special needs. But through shared understanding, common experiences, and their children’s love of play and connection, several families served by Children and Family Services (CFS) have formed meaningful and lasting bonds.
When a few providers realized they were all supporting families of young children with Down syndrome who wanted opportunities to meet and connect, they quickly came together to create something special. Rather than holding traditional one-on-one sessions in the family home, they began organizing early intervention, occupational therapy, and physical therapy sessions as a small, informal playgroup. For the past 6–9 months, the group has gathered monthly, creating a joyful space where children and parents alike can learn, grow, and support one another.
The impact has been wonderful to witness. The children encourage each other to move more, communicate more, and laugh even more, while parents exchange resources, encouragement, and understanding. At a recent playgroup, the group even celebrated the third birthday of one of the children as she graduated from Early Start and CFS services — a meaningful milestone shared by a community that has grown together.
Relationships are at the heart of development, and it is truly a joy and privilege for CFS to help foster these connections among the families we serve.
