Disability Pride Month, observed in July, is a month-long celebration dedicated to promoting the pride, self-acceptance, and achievements of individuals with disabilities, and it coincides with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The ADA, enacted on July 26, 1990, is a landmark civil rights law in the United States that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities and promotes their equal access to employment, public accommodations, transportation, and more.

Disability Pride Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about disability rights, advocate for inclusion and accessibility, and challenge societal stigmas and misconceptions surrounding disabilities, all while commemorating the transformative impact of the ADA. Have a conversation with someone about their disability. One of the best ways to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about disability is to talk to people with disabilities. Ask them about their experiences and what it means to them to be disabled.


Use inclusive language. When you’re talking about people with disabilities, use language that is respectful and inclusive. Avoid using terms like “handicapped” or “disabled person,” which can often be used as stigmatizing labels. Instead, use people-first language like “person with a disability” which identifies the individual first as a person, and acknowledges their disability second.
