Rooted in Strength: George’s Story of Family, Culture, and Courage

George Abina has been a client of Hope Services since 1990. Born in Mountain View, he has spent most of his life in the Gilroy area. George comes from a large, close-knit family rooted in Hispanic heritage. With their support, he joined the Hope Gilroy Day Program. He was raised by loving grandparents and extended family who played a big role in shaping who he is today. Now living in San Jose with his sister, George has gained more independence and become deeply involved in his community.
A dedicated Bay Area sports fan, George proudly supports the Giants, Warriors, Sharks, and 49ers. Though disappointed by the A’s departure, he remains loyal to the local teams. His favorite holidays are Cinco de Mayo and Día de los Muertos, the latter giving him a meaningful way to honor loved ones who have passed. He also enjoys vacationing in San Diego and Arizona with family and friends, spending time hiking, attending games, and enjoying water sports.
George has faced personal challenges over the years, but his resilience and commitment to both his physical and mental health have remained strong. While he identifies with his special needs diagnosis, he doesn’t let it define him. He’s particularly vocal about standing up to bullying and discrimination. Though he finds math difficult, he excels in reading and is proud of how far he’s come. Through regular appointments and a strong support network, he has maintained his stability and independence.
He values the services he receives from Hope Services and the Counseling Center, which have empowered him to speak up for others with special needs and abilities. George currently volunteers at Second Harvest Food Bank three times a week and loves caring for his three-year-old great-niece, who brings him joy and laughter.
One of George’s proudest achievements was registering to vote in the 2020 Presidential Election. He has now voted twice and looks forward to casting his ballot in the next election.
George continues to advocate for his independence and embraces his culture and identity with pride. His determination and positivity remain unwavering, no matter what challenges come his way.
