Finding Purpose Through Perseverance: Mark’s Journey

Five years ago, Mark was going through one of the most challenging chapters of his life. After a divorce, he found himself feeling isolated and uncertain. He had a choice to make—hold to what was familiar, or take a leap toward something new. Mark chose to start over.

That leap led him to Hope Services and the Counseling Center in Santa Cruz, where he began working with a counselor. At first, Mark struggled with feelings of loneliness and confusion. But over time, and with consistent guidance, he began to rediscover his sense of self. He thought about working with children, believing his own struggles could transform into making a meaningful difference—and it changed everything.

“[The Counseling Center has] been very supportive. They understand my needs, and I enjoy working with them,” Mark said of his new path. “They’re flexible, and every time I leave, I feel peaceful and warm.”

Today, Mark is in his early 60s and recently relocated to Salinas, where he continues his care with a new counselor. More importantly, he’s found purpose as a volunteer at a local elementary school, working in a special education classroom and helping with yard duties. His days are now filled with laughter, connection, and a sense of meaning he hadn’t felt in years.

“I get so much love helping the little ones,” he said. “I’m very gentle and patient. I spread love and joy. My heart really goes out to them. They won’t let me out of their sight.”

Mark’s passion for supporting children in special education stems from his own lived experience. In 1968, when he was just a child, his parents divorced. He struggled to focus in school, and the district recommended special education. His mother was initially in denial. As a young boy trying to make sense of a changing world, Mark turned to music for comfort. Songs by John Denver, Tom Jones, and Glen Campbell became his anchor.

That emotional connection came full circle recently. One of the children at the school—a first grader with focus challenges—reminded Mark of himself at that age. The school asked Mark to give the student extra attention, and a bond quickly formed. “We’re like a team now,” Mark said. He even shared some of the same songs that helped him decades ago.

“This is the happiest I’ve ever been,” he said with a smile.

He’s also thinking about the future. Mark dreams of writing a book about his life—a collection of stories and reflections drawn from his remarkably sharp memory. He hopes his journey can help others find their own path to healing. His dream is to meet a partner who shares his passion for service—maybe someone in education or special needs—and build a heartwarming life together. “I’d love to be part of a loving family and help raise the next generation,” he said.

Mark knows his journey hasn’t been easy. It’s taken resilience, vulnerability, and a deep commitment to giving back. But every step has been worth it.

His message to others:

“Keep going and keep giving back. Life isn’t over. There’s no need to worry too much—everything will fall into place. Just take one day at a time.”
