Annual Report 2021-2022

Dear Friends,

I am honored to share with you the results of a highly successful year, one marked by client satisfaction, community reunion, and organizational advancement. Hope Services is a recipient of numerous awards this year, which is a testament to our high standards and excellent teams. Most importantly, our clients and families have never rated our services more highly.

Everything we do at Hope is motivated by our mission to improve the lives of our clients. Over the past year, our staff have diligently worked to reopen our day programs while maintaining a safe environment for all. I am grateful for each of our hard-working staff and especially those who have provided essential services in Homestart, Supported Living, Community Employment and the Counseling Center since the beginning of the pandemic crisis. I am inspired by all of our teams and the combined efforts that bring joy and hope to those we serve each and every day.

The retention of our staff is critical to Hope’s success, and we have made continuous
improvements to compensation and benefits that support career satisfaction at Hope Services. You’ll learn about our new or enhanced benefits in this report, including: staff Scholarship Program, increased medical benefits, financial planning services, and Mental Health Counseling (Line of Hope). We are committed to improving benefits an compensation for all staff, in order to remain competitive for our line of work in the Bay Area.

I am proud of Hope’s expansion this past year, having opened a Mental Health Counseling office in San Mateo in September. This expansion will bring Hope’s top-rated mental health services to San Mateo County residents with a co-occurring intellectual or developmental disability.

I want to extend a special thanks to our sponsors, donors, and Board of Directors for another successful In Concert With Hope. We raised over $650,000 this year, bringing us to $2.2 million raised to support Hope’s work over the past four years. A special shout out to our current Board Chair and In Concert With Hope Committee Chair, Bill Palmer, for his leadership. I’m pleased to share that the Board of Directors has dedicated the Board Conference Room at our San Jose Headquarters to the Palmer Family for all they have done for Hope Services the past 18+ years.

Finally, I want to thank you. Your friendship and support of Hope Services keeps us going, and growing, in every season. I am proud to lead Hope Services and I am grateful to this strong and caring community.

With much warmth and appreciation,

Charles “Chip” Huggins, JD
President/CEO

Celebrating 70 Years of Hope

Hope Services emerged decades ago, to bridge this divide and restore hope. It all began with a school of 12 children in South San Jose, established by parents who were committed to providing an education their children deserved but were not yet receiving in public schools.

We’ve come a long way since 1952. From a small preschool in South San Jose serving a handful of clients to serving over 3,600 clients spanning 8 counties, Hope Services continues to evolve and over the last decade, we have expanded our services to include behavioral health counseling, addressing a critical need for our community.

Increased In-Person Services

Programs across all districts continue to work on increasing the number of clients receiving in-person services by encouraging those who can return to site-based activities to gradually do so.

The Future of From Hope To Home™

While we transition to in-person service, distance learning remains an option for clients who are unable to attend in person or prefer to meet virtually. From Hope To Home™ continues to serve clients with a high-quality, online curriculum designed to help clients stay connected and learn.

Events and Fundraising

Our largest fundraiser of the year, the 4th Annual In Concert with Hope was a major success, raising more than $650,000! Hundreds of guests gathered in-person on July 23rd, 2022 at the beautiful Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, celebrating the impact of Hope’s work over the past year, as well as the past 70 years.

Two-time Grammy award-nominated saxophonist Mindi Abair, and legendary Bay Area funk and soul band, Tower of Power, performed for the sold-out fundraising concert benefiting Hope Services and our clients with developmental disabilities and mental health needs.
