We launched our Bridge Program to help people on the autism spectrum live rich, rewarding lives as full members of their communities — from home, to school, to work, or out with friends.
HopeTHRIFT opened in San Jose, providing jobs for the people we serve and sustainable funding for our programs while offering value to our community with affordable items, like bikes, fashion, and home goods.
We moved into larger and more modern facilities in Salinas and Seaside with versatile classrooms where we offer state-of-the-art Media Classes, Computer Education, and Employment Training.
And while your generosity has gone far this past year to provide new opportunities for hundreds of people, we can do even more together in 2018!
We are excited to introduce HopeSTUDIO — a new social enterprise designed to help our clients develop their talents as skilled, profitable artists. This venture creates a space, both literally and figuratively, for people with developmental disabilities to design and create handmade items, like textiles and jewelry, that will be offered for sale in our stores and online.
HopeSTUDIO’s Weaving Program is already off to a great start. Under the tutelage of master weavers, participants in this program learn to use looms to create beautiful, high-quality textile items, such as towels, handbags, and scarves.
The task of weaving is very special because of its rhythmic quality, which makes it both therapeutic and enjoyable; and because most of it is intuitive, many people with a range of abilities can do it.
The transformative process of creating art also provides each person with a unique opportunity for self-expression.
HopeSTUDIO goes beyond recreation and therapy though. It’s been said that a thing of beauty is a joy forever. Our HopeSTUDIO artists are learning that creating beauty is a joy…that can also be a job. Each time a HopeSTUDIO item is sold, the artist who created the piece will receive a portion of the proceeds.
“I like working with my hands and love weaving, it’s my favorite new activity. Even though I have more to learn, I’m good at it! My grandparents and great grandparents sewed, crocheted and knitted. It makes me feel close to them.” — Tanya
We are especially proud of HopeSTUDIO because it offers our clients a creative pathway to engage with their community. Each colorful, one-of-a-kind item created in HopeSTUDIO emanates with the personal style, heart and pride of the artist who created it. These items are sure to bring pleasure and enrich the lives of all those in our community who are fortunate enough to take an item home.
Our staff and artists are eager to share their passion for HopeSTUDIO with you. Each of our four HopeSTUDIO locations in Mountain View, San Jose, Salinas, and Santa Cruz is open to the public. We warmly invite you to stop by for a visit to observe the artists at work and to even try your own hand at weaving with our looms. For hours and locations, please visit HopeServices.org.
It only takes one act of caring to change a person’s life. Every time you give to Hope Services, you change someone’s life in amazing ways!
